NADI, Fiji — For Alessa Aguon, founder and owner of Concierge Palau, stepping onto the global stage was a dream realized at the 2024 Pacific Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Solutions Forum. Nominated by Palau’s Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture, and Environment, Steven Victor, Aguon attended the event held at the Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort from November 5-8, 2024.
The Forum, co-hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Government of Fiji, was the largest of its kind in the Pacific, with hundreds of delegates from across the region, including researchers, policymakers, international donors, and private sector leaders. It focused on transforming agrifood systems under the theme: “Transforming Agrifood Systems for our Blue Pacific Continent through Better Production, Better Nutrition, a Better Environment, and a Better Life.”
For Aguon, this international gathering was a transformative experience. Representing Palau, she shared her perspective as Food Processing Manager of Palau Taro Flour and engaged in dialogues on food security, sustainable agriculture, and climate resilience. “I went in thinking I understood my role,” she reflected. “But I came away with a deeper understanding of how interconnected our challenges are and how important it is to collaborate across borders. The possibilities are endless.”
The Forum provided a platform for Aguon to exchange ideas with leaders and innovators, delving into topics such as fisheries management, empowering small-scale producers, and addressing the impacts of climate change. She also highlighted Palau’s conservation efforts and cultural values, offering a unique voice in the global discussion
Set against the backdrop of Fiji’s stunning turquoise waters and vibrant community spirit, the event further deepened Aguon’s commitment to her work. “Fiji reminded me of why we do what we do,” she said. “It’s about preserving the beauty and abundance of our islands for future generations and finding strength in shared goals.”
Returning to Palau, Aguon expressed gratitude to Minister Victor for the opportunity, emphasizing how the experience broadened her perspective. “This experience showed me that even as a small business owner from a tiny island nation, I have a role to play in the global conversation.”
Aguon’s journey is a testament to the power of passion and the importance of stepping outside one’s comfort zone. Her story serves as an inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs, proving that meaningful change begins with a single step and the courage to embrace opportunities.
The Forum itself marked a significant milestone in Pacific collaboration, building on previous SIDS Solutions Forums in Samoa and Antigua and Barbuda. It underscored the importance of collective action to achieve sustainable development goals and ensure no one is left behind in the Blue Pacific.
