Palauans, classified as eligible non-Europeans, currently do not require a visa to enter the United Kingdom. However, beginning January 8, 2025, they will need to obtain an electronic travel authorization (ETA) under the UK’s new immigration policy.
In a move aimed at digitizing its border and immigration system, the UK government announced that all visitors who do not need a visa will be required to obtain an ETA by April 2025. This includes Palauan citizens, who can apply for the ETA starting November 27, 2024.
The new policy mandates that everyone planning to travel to the UK — except British and Irish citizens — must secure permission in advance, either through an ETA or an eVisa. The ETA will be electronically linked to the traveler’s passport, ensuring enhanced security checks before they embark on their journey.
The cost of an ETA is £10, allowing multiple entries into the UK for stays of up to six months within a two-year validity period, or until the holder’s passport expires, whichever comes first.
For more details on ETA eligibility and application procedures, Palauan travelers are encouraged to visit GOV.UK, where information is readily available. The application process is designed to be quick and straightforward via the UK ETA app.
The new ETA requirement aligns with similar measures implemented by other countries, such as the United States and Australia, and underscores a commitment to modernize the UK’s immigration system while bolstering security.
Seema Malhotra, the UK’s Minister for Migration and Citizenship, emphasized the importance of digitization in providing a smooth travel experience for millions of visitors and enhancing the security of the immigration process.
With the UK expected to welcome a significant contribution to its tourism economy, estimated at over £32 billion this year, this shift towards digital travel authorization presents a streamlined approach for Palauan citizens and other eligible travelers. (By: L.N. Reklai)
