New calendar, kindergarten program, and technology upgrades among achievements

KOROR, Palau — The Palau Ministry of Education (MOE) is celebrating a successful 2023, with Dr. Dale Jenkins, the ministry’s director, highlighting several key accomplishments during a year-end assessment.

“I’ve been an educator for 49 years, and I don’t think I’ve had a year such as this one, a more fulfilling and a more accomplished year,” Dr. Jenkins said.

One of the most significant achievements is the new year-round school calendar, which replaced the traditional summer break with intercessions. This has allowed schools to offer new programs for students, such as diving instruction, which has been a big hit.

Another major success is the launch of the ministry’s first-ever kindergarten program. With over 100 students enrolled, the program is expected to have a positive impact on education in Palau in the years to come.

Other new programs, such as the Accelerated Reading Program and the Be-able Program, are also up and running thanks to improved internet connectivity in all public schools.

The ministry has also implemented a new school database system that allows parents to access their children’s grades electronically.

In addition to these programmatic achievements, the MOE has also made significant improvements to school infrastructure. Air conditioning has been installed in nearly all schools, and cafeterias, roofs, and other facilities have been repaired or upgraded.

Dr. Jenkins commended MOE Chief Ray Mechol for his leadership in driving these improvements.

“We’ve come a long way,” Dr. Jenkins said. “As a stranger coming into the Ministry, I thank everyone in the Ministry for being patient with me and working so hard toward our common goal.”

The MOE’s successes in 2023 are a testament to the ministry’s commitment to providing quality education to all students in Palau, according to Dr. Jenkins. The new calendar, kindergarten program, and technology upgrades are all important steps in the right direction, and the ministry is well-positioned to continue making progress in the years to come.
