The Palau Energy Administration (PEA) had completed the household electrical survey in Koror, on May 23, which is part of their efforts to achieve Palau’s energy target by 2025.

The survey, which was conducted with the assistance of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and United Nations Development Programme(UNDP), had surveyed a total of 584 households in Koror and Airai.

Households that participated in the survey automatically got an entry for the drawing contest. For Koror State, Sheila Tmarsel won the drawing contest and took home a monetary prize. Previously, for the Airai survey, Peggy Andreas, a survey participant, was also awarded a monetary prize at the PEA office for winning the draw.

After completing the survey, the PEA will proceed to phase two of the work which is to upload the data and forward it to IUCN and UNDP for the analysis.

IUCN and UNDP will then provide their findings and recommendations in terms of energy efficiency strategies, energy labeling, and other relevant findings to help Palau achieve its target of 35% energy efficiency by the year 2025.

PEA Executive Director Gregorio Decherong previously told Island Times in an interview that in a household census, they had found that Koror and Airai homes have higher electricity usage because they used more appliances.

Previously, President Tommy Remengesau, Jr.  signed an Executive Order establishing a Palau National Energy Committee tasked to take steps to fulfill Palau’s ambitious target of 45 percent reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2025.

Remengesau had also expressed his confidence that Palau is in a strong position to meet its 2025 renewable energy target of 45 percent. (Rhealyn C. Pojas/Reporter)
