KOROR, Palau — The Peace Corps is returning to Palau after years of absence, following the signing of a memorandum of understanding on July 22 between the Ministry of Health & Human Services and the Peace Corps program in Palau.
The agreement builds on a pact first formalized in September 2024 by then- Minister Kaleb Udui Jr. and U.S. Peace Corps Director Carol Spahn during the United Nations General Assembly.
Peace Corps volunteers first began serving in Palau in 1966, contributing to education, health and community development. For decades, they worked closely with local communities, leaving what officials describe as a lasting legacy of cross-cultural exchange and service.
“This historic partnership was suspended for a time, but its return has been eagerly awaited,” the ministry said in a statement.
The signing was attended by Vice President and Health Minister Raynold Arnold Oilouch, along with Peace Corps Country Director Marguerite Roy, based in the Philippines, and Palau Program Manager Kevin Giddens.
Officials said the renewed partnership aims to build on past successes and strengthen community-based programs that support the health and well-being of Palauans.
