The Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) is bidding farewell to one of its longest serving board members, Vice Chairman Hiroyuki Tanaka, the President of Dolphins Pacific.
Mr. Tanaka joined PICRC’s board of directors in 2013, and has served continuously for the past eight years. In recognition of his outstanding service, he was presented with an official certificate of appreciation from President Surangel Whipps Jr. at a farewell luncheon last week.
“It was an honor to serve on the board of PICRC,” said Mr. Tanaka. “While I will no longer be a board member, I will continue to support the Center and its work.”
During his tenure on the board, Mr. Tanaka was instrumental in establishing PICRC’s relationship with Toba Aquarium, a premier aquarium in Japan. Through a sister aquarium agreement, Toba Aquarium provided the Center with staff exchange opportunities, training and capacity building, and valuable equipment donations.
In addition, Mr. Tanaka facilitated joint programs between PICRC and Dolphins Pacific, including a study abroad program for Japanese students. He also contributed to PICRC’s research projects and joined the Center’s Helen Reef monitoring survey in Hatohobei State in 2018.
PICRC’s Board of Directors and staff wish Mr. Tanaka the best as he departs from the board and pursues future endeavors.
