Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) announces the release of the 2021 Arts & Tides Calendar to the public.
The theme for this year’s calendar is “Saving Our Oceans from Plastic Pollution.” It was chosen to remind our youth, the community, and the general public about the impact that plastic pollution has on our marine ecosystems. It is estimated that by the year 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean. We hope that this calendar inspires students to become advocates to protect our oceans, while at the same time, helping us find creative solutions to help mitigate this problem.
A total of 343 entries from 13 elementary schools and five high schools were submitted to this year’s art contest. “Even though the number of entries were much lower compared to previous years, the number of students who participated still exceeded our expectations, because the contest was conducted during the time when schools were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” stated PICRC CEO, Dr. Yimnang Golbuu. “We want to especially recognize and thank the principals and teachers because participation of students depends on support and encouragements, they get school principals and teachers. We also recognize and thank the judges for their participation, and a special thank you to the sponsors, without whom, this year’s calendar would not have been made possible.”
