The Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) has welcomed a new addition to its team, bringing fresh technical expertise and energy to its operations. Recent Palau Community College graduate Ethan Tekau Uchel steps into the role of Maintenance Technician, where he will help ensure the Center’s facilities remain efficient and ready to support critical research and community programs.
The Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) is pleased to welcome Mr. Ethan Tekau Uchel as the Center’s new Maintenance Technician.

Mr. Uchel recently completed his studies at Palau Community College (PCC), where he earned an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Construction Technology. Before joining PICRC, he gained practical experience as a construction worker and carpenter within the PCC Physical Plant, where he developed skills across various residential construction related fields.
In his new role, Mr. Uchel will focus on maintaining and improving the Center’s facilities and equipment, providing essential technical support to ensure the smooth operation of PICRC’s infrastructure.
“We are very excited to have Ethan join our team,” stated Ms. Joy Shmull, Mr. Uchel’s immediate supervisor. “His technical background and his proactive attitude are exactly what we need. We look forward to his contributions and are eager to support his professional growth as he helps us keeping our facilities modernized and efficient for our staff, researchers and the community.”
Outside of his professional work, Mr. Uchel is an active outdoorsman, he is often found fishing or playing basketball. He brings a ‘can-do’ attitude and a tireless energy to the maintenance team and is eager to support PICRC’s upcoming community events and research initiatives.
