On January 11, 2021, President Remengesau addressed the 1st Regular Session of the 10th Kelulul Ngardmau, thanking the members for the rare invitation in his final weeks as President of the Republic. The President took the opportunity to speak on a more personal note congratulating the legislature and the governor as they begin a new administration in this new year.

The President also took the opportunity to thank the people of Ngardmau for their support through all of his 9 elections, allowing him to serve the Republic as Senator, Vice President and President. “Although the State of Ngardmau is small in terms of population, the people of Ngardmau helped in every election to bring and keep a grassroots representation in our nation building,” he said.

The President predicted big things for the future of Ngardmau, including the eventual development of commercial port facilities.

The President recently discussed the issue of Ngardmau Port Development during high-profile meetings with US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper and US Secretary of the Navy Kenneth Braithwaite. Observers throughout Palau, and perhaps especially in the state of Ngardmau, are waiting to see what, if anything, will come from those priority discussions for Palau.

President Remengesau also praised the environmental conservation efforts of Ngardmau State, observing that the use of local resources can often “close the gap between rich and poor,” while preserving value for future generations.

He closed by encouraging the people and government of Ngardmau State to work closely with the incoming administration of Surangel Whipps, Jr., for the good of Ngardmau and of all Palau. (Contributed Story)
