Ngerulmud, Palau — The Senate of the 12th Olbiil Era Kelulau (OEK), in its 24th day of the 2nd Regular Session held on Thursday, May 1, 2025, voted to confirm four individuals appointed by the President to serve in key national positions. These appointments reflect a continued effort by the executive branch to fill vital roles in Palau’s diplomatic, educational, and regulatory institutions.

In a show of full support, Senators present voted unanimously to reappoint Taha Mikata as the Republic of Palau’s Permanent Ambassador to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Mikata, who has previously served in the position, garnered all 13 votes from the Senators present during the session. With 15 members total in the Senate, only 13 were present for the vote, making the decision unanimous among those in attendance.

Also receiving full support from the 13 Senators present was Genesis Roberto, a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), who was appointed to serve a two-year term on the Palau Board of Accountancy. Her professional background in finance and accounting is expected to bring added expertise to the board, which is responsible for regulating the accounting profession and ensuring the integrity of financial practices across Palau.

In a separate vote, the Senate confirmed Jeffery Olgeriil to serve a four-year term on the Palau Language Commission. Olgeriil’s confirmation passed with 11 Senators voting in favor and 2 voting against. The Language Commission plays a critical role in preserving and promoting the use of the Palauan language, and Olgeriil is expected to contribute significantly to ongoing efforts aimed at cultural and linguistic preservation.

The final vote of the day was cast in support of Sylvester Alonz, who was appointed to serve a four-year term on the Palau National Scholarship Board. His confirmation passed with 12 Senators voting in favor and one opposed. The Scholarship Board is tasked with overseeing scholarship programs that assist Palauan students in pursuing higher education, both domestically and abroad.

All four individuals received the majority vote required for confirmation and will now officially assume their responsibilities in their respective roles. Their appointments underscore the importance of strong leadership and expertise in advancing Palau’s goals in education, language preservation, professional standards, and international diplomacy.
