Overview:
The Palau Supreme Court has established a Rules Committee to review existing court procedures and consider proposed changes to civil and criminal rules. The committee is also inviting the public, judges, justices and members of the Palau Bar Association to submit recommendations for improving court rules.
The Supreme Court has established a Committee on Rules of Practice and Procedure to support the continued review and improvement of the rules governing judicial proceedings.
Clear and effective rules are essential to the fair and efficient administration of justice. To help ensure that the Judiciary’s rules continue to meet those objectives, the Rules Committee will provide a formal process for reviewing existing rules and considering recommendations for change.
The Rules Committee will review rules of practice and procedure governing civil and criminal matters, evaluate proposals for amendments, conduct research and analysis, and prepare proposed rule changes for consideration by the Supreme Court. The Committee may also recommend new rules for judicial proceedings where rules do not currently exist.
Certain matters fall outside the Committee’s responsibilities, including the Palau Bar Admission Committee’s Rules, rules governing Continuing Legal Education, the Disciplinary Rules, and rules involving administrative or other matters.
All proposed amendments and new rules developed by the Committee will be submitted to the Supreme Court through the Chief Justice for review and final approval.
The Rules Committee welcomes proposals from the justices and judges, members of the Palau Bar Association, and members of the public. Proposals to amend an existing rule or create a new rule may be submitted to the Rules Committee at JRC.Submissions@palausupremecourt.net.
