KOROR, Palau — Funeral services for former Senate President, House Speaker and businessman Surangel Whipps Sr. are scheduled for Monday, May 4, in Ngatpang, according to relatives.
Services will begin that morning at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Koror. A funeral procession will follow, making passes around the premises of Surangel’s Supercenter before traveling through Airai and continuing to Ngarchelong.
In Ngarchelong, Whipps will be formally relieved of his traditional title, Madraibelau, as part of customary observances.
He will then be transported to Ngerulmud, where he will lie in state, before proceeding to Ngatpang for the final funeral service at Bai ra Nglai.
Family sources said buses will be available on the day of the funeral for those needing transportation. Pickups will be arranged from Koksai and Surangel’s Supercenter.
Whipps, a former Senate president and House speaker, was a prominent national leader and businessman. He was widely known for his generosity and community service. He was also a member of the Palau Council of Chiefs and held the title Rekemesik in Ngatpang state.
