TTM and Bureau of Fisheries conclude annual coastal fisheries project review
On June 25, 2025, the annual progress presentation of the “Strengthening Coastal Fisheries Management Project” was held at the Palau Bureau of Fisheries. The event was co-hosted by the Taiwan Technical Mission and the Palau Bureau of Fisheries. Its purpose was to review the project’s achievements since its launch in 2024 and to engage the fishing community in understanding and applying sustainable fisheries practices and technological management tools, while increasing the initiative’s visibility and local support.
Jimmy Tseng, Project Lead from the Taiwan Technical Mission, led a detailed presentation. He described the collaboration that began in April 2024 to establish standardized operating procedures for fish catch reporting. By June 2025, this reporting regime had been in steady operation for a full year, laying the foundation for a structured fisheries data-collection system in Palau.
To further motivate participation and data-driven decision-making, personalized and confidential analysis reports were given to the top 10 fishermen who contributed the most data. These reports featured individual catch statistics, key species breakdowns, and trends displayed in visual formats—enabling fishermen to better understand their operations and resource usage, and encouraging deeper engagement in resource management.
The event also showcased the application of AIS (Automatic Identification System) in fisheries oversight. Speakers highlighted its benefits for maritime safety and resource management, explaining how AIS data integrates with the catch-reporting platform to support a data-driven coastal fisheries management model.
The presentation concluded successfully, strengthening collaboration between government authorities and the fishing community. It effectively elevated the project’s profile and inspired greater community involvement—marking a significant milestone toward advancing sustainable coastal fisheries in Palau.
