A Taiwanese businessman and Japan’s foreign minister were recently bestowed the “honorary citizenship” title by Palau’s government.

Businessman Eugene T. C. Wu, chairman of the Shin Kong Wu Ho-Su Memorial Hospital (SKH) in Taiwan and Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono received the accolade for their significant contributions to Palau.

The SKH, one of the prestigious hospitals in Taiwan in which Chin is heading, is actively engaged in medical cooperation with Palau’s health institution.

Over 2,500 Palauan patients had benefited from the medical referral program of the SKH since the cooperation with the country was launched in 2007.

The SKH had also dispatched a total of 149 medical missions to Palau that benefited more than 5,300 patients and had helped improve the country’s healthcare services through donations of medical equipment to the Belau National Hospital and staff development programs.

Senate Joint Resolution No. 10-53 stated that over millions of dollars’ worth of medical equipment were poured out by SKH for the Belau National Hospital, the country’s only public hospital facility.

The SKH was also recognized for its partnership with the Taiwan Technical Mission (TTM) and the Ministry of Education (MOE) in providing free healthy meals to public school students.

“The Olbiil Era Kelulau (Palau’s National Congress) is overwhelmed with gratitude for the assistance and generosity extended by Shin Kong Wu Ho-Su Memorial Hospital to the people and the government of the Republic of Palau,” the resolution read.

Meanwhile, Japanese foreign minister Kono was also bestowed the same title during his first visit to the nation on August 6.

House Joint Resolution No. 10-48-11 recognized Kono’s “diplomatic efforts, contributions, and assistance that he has provided and continues to provide” to Palau.

The resolution also stated that Kono, as Japan’s foreign minister, assists in developing Japan’s foreign policy including “longstanding support” to Palau.
