Koror, Palau- A Taiwanese man, Yen-An Lai, also known as Andy Mesubed or Andy Lai, sustained severe arm injuries in an incident at Jins Club, a KTV bar in Ngerbeched, Palau, on February 27, 2024.

Lai was transported to the Belau National Hospital with severe cuts to his left arm. Hospital staff reported the incident to the Bureau of Public Safety (BPS) at around 9:40 p.m. after treating Lai.

“We received the report from the hospital, not directly from the scene,” said BPS Public Information Officer Chief Ngiramengior. Lai had no other reported injuries beyond the arm cuts.

The severity of Lai’s injuries required ICU care, and he was eventually flown to Taiwan for further medical attention on Wednesday.

Authorities are investigating the incident through the Criminal Investigation Division. “We cannot determine whether he was a victim or not until the investigation is complete,” said Ngiramengior. Lai reportedly did not provide any details about the incident to police.

Lai has a history with the Palauan legal system. He was questioned last year in connection with the kidnapping of a 49-year-old Chinese man. The man was abducted from a parking lot and taken to a boat, never to be seen again.

Lai also has a prior criminal conviction for theft of a safe from a tour company and served time for the offense. He attended Palau High School and grew up in the country. However, he is listed as an undesirable alien and will be barred from re-entering Palau upon his recovery.
