KOROR — The Bureau of Agriculture will resume buying taro from local farmers after its taro flour processing plant returned to full operation.
The plant halted production March 5 due to electrical problems, sharply cutting taro purchases from about 1,000 pounds to 200 pounds a week. The bureau sold the taro it did buy to local retailers while repairing the plant.
The agency has completed electrical upgrades, including installing individual power surges and breakers and conducting electrical tests.
“The successful resolution of the electrical issues at the Food Processing Center underscores our commitment to maintaining high standards of safety and efficiency,” Acting Director Kashgar Rengulbai said in a statement. “We look forward to the positive impact this will have in the community.”
The bureau said it will soon sell taro flour in retail stores.
“We are particularly grateful for the community’s patience and support during this period,” the agency said. “This will enhance food security but also provide a valuable product for our local markets.”
