Palauan athletes gathered with coaches and national leaders for a send-off ceremony on June 11th at the Palau National Olympic Gymnasium (PNOC) before departing for the Micronesian Games.

First-Time Excitement: Several athletes expressed excitement about the upcoming competition. Basketball player Jason, a versatile guard, is looking forward to his first trip to the Marshall Islands and hopes to return with gold alongside his team. Jason, like  many athletes,  feels a combination of nervousness and excitement, but confidently states: “The hard work is done, so now all that’s left is to go and perform.”

Similarly, Garsten and Mary from Team Palau’s Athletics are in the same boat. Garsten added that they have previously participated in international competitions, but this will also be their first time participating in the Micronesian Games. Mary shared, “I’m sure I’ll get nervous as soon as I get on to the track, but for now, I’m just excited.” These young, ambitious athletes are eager to show everyone what they have and bring home some gold!

Garsten and Mary, veterans of international competitions like the Pacific Games and World Championships, are eager to make their Micronesian Games debut.

Weightlifting Aspirations: Weightlifter Roxanne, a three-year competitor, is also making her Micronesian Games debut for Team Palau. Focused on staying calm under pressure, she aims to achieve her coach’s targets and personal bests (PRs). “I’m trying to get my head into that competition mindset and not let the pressure get to me,” Roxanne said.“I definitely want to hit all the numbers that my coach gives me, and hit PRs.”While a gold medal is the ultimate goal, Roxanne acknowledges any medal would be a significant accomplishment.

Team Palau Takes Flight: The team departed Palau on a chartered flight Wednesday morning and arrived safely in Majuro, Marshall Islands, that evening. Aquatics, basketball, micro all-around, softball, spearfishing, table tennis, volleyball, and weightlifting competitions begin first. Team Palau athletics, tennis, and wrestling will join them on June 15th for their respective events.

Best Wishes: We wish all Team Palau athletes the best of luck! Go out there, have fun, compete safely, and return home with achievements to celebrate.
