His untimely passing on February 28, 2025, at the age of 77, marks the end of an era, but his legacy remains deeply woven into the fabric of Palauan governance, diplomacy, and community service.

Born on August 3, 1947, in Peleliu, Shmull dedicated his life to his people, serving in numerous leadership roles with unwavering commitment. From the classrooms of Peleliu Elementary School, where he began as a teacher, to the highest offices of Palau’s government, where he served as Minister of State and Chief of Staff, his career was defined by his steadfast belief in the power of public service.

His impact extended beyond government halls—he was a businessman, a community leader, and an advocate for sports and cultural preservation. As the Governor of Peleliu from 2013 to 2021, Shmull championed policies that uplifted his home state, strengthening infrastructure, governance, and economic opportunities. His service also reached the national level, where he played a crucial role in shaping Palau’s international relations as Chief of the Division of Foreign Relations and a member of the Compact Review Commission.

Beyond politics, Shmull was an entrepreneur who contributed to Palau’s economic development, establishing businesses such as Shmull Enterprise and The Guest Lodge. His leadership extended to sports, where he served as President of the Belau Baseball Federation, reflecting his lifelong passion for the game.

Temmy L. Shmull’s passing is not just a loss for his family but for the entire nation. He is survived by his children, siblings, and grandchildren, who carry forward his enduring legacy. The Palauan government, through the Twelfth Olbiil Era Kelulau, has formally recognized his contributions in a joint resolution, ensuring that his memory remains an integral part of the nation’s history.

As Palau bids farewell to one of its most dedicated sons, his influence lives on in the institutions he shaped, the communities he served, and the lives he touched. His life was a testament to the values of leadership, dedication, and love for one’s country—principles that will continue to inspire future generations. (By: L.N. Reklai)
