Dear Editor,
Leaders: Serve the People, Not Yourselves
So during our Constitution Day, I am reminded that in small nations like Palau, the relationship between leaders and constituents should be one of mutual respect, transparency, and genuine service. However, in recent times, it seems that our leaders have become more interested in looking good on television and playing political games rather than addressing the real issues that affect our daily lives.
As we navigate the challenges of maintaining essential services like power, it’s crucial that our leaders stop hindering organizations like the Palau Public Utilities Corporation (PPUC) from doing their jobs. The constant political interference and lack of adequate funding are crippling these essential services. If the government is not willing to provide the necessary financial support, then it should at least allow PPUC to charge what it truly costs to deliver power. Instead, we see leaders who are more interested in scoring political points than in ensuring that our basic needs are met.
This year, my vote will reflect my deep dissatisfaction with the current leadership. For the past four years and more, we have been burdened with disappointments and unfulfilled promises. It’s time for a change, and I will be looking to newer candidates who understand the importance of genuine public service.
Our current leaders have consistently failed us. They impose taxes on us, then turn around and act as if they are doing us a favor by offering refunds. But the truth is, these refunds are not enough. The Palau Government Stress Tax (PGST) is a prime example of this hypocrisy. Leaders who voted for this tax are now complaining about its effects, but they were the ones who imposed it on us in the first place. Do they even read the reports and data provided to them, or do they simply not care?
It’s disheartening to see leaders who only show up when they need our votes. For the rest of their term, they are invisible, only to resurface, having grown fat off our taxes, when it’s time to campaign. This kind of behavior is unacceptable. We need leaders who are present, who listen to our concerns, and who act in our best interests.
The frustration among the people is palpable. We struggle to make ends meet, yet our leaders continue to make decisions that make it harder for us to survive. They claim to be giving back through refunds and benefits, but these are mere crumbs compared to what they take from us in taxes. This cycle of taxation and inadequate refunds is not a solution; it’s a burden that we can no longer bear.
It’s time for our leaders to stop the “poli-tricking” and start acting with integrity and responsibility. They must remember that they were elected to serve us, not to serve themselves. They need to provide clear, honest answers about how they plan to address the real issues facing our country, rather than deflecting blame or making empty promises.
As citizens, we must also hold ourselves accountable. We need to stay informed, engage in the political process, and vote for candidates who demonstrate a genuine commitment to serving the public. It is not enough to complain about the current state of affairs; we must take action to bring about the change we desire.
In November, my vote will be a statement against the current leadership. I will remember the past four years of neglect and disappointment. I will seek out new leaders who are willing to put in the hard work required to make our country a better place for all its citizens. Leaders who understand that their role is to serve, not to grandstand or play politics with our lives.
We need leaders who are not just mouthpieces, but true representatives of the people. Leaders who are willing to make the tough decisions, who prioritize the needs of their constituents over their own political ambitions. Leaders who understand that their primary responsibility is to ensure the well-being and prosperity of the people they were elected to serve.
It’s time for a change. It’s time for leadership that genuinely cares about Palau and its people. Let’s vote for those who will stand up without fear and truly listen to what we want done.
Your Humble Servant
Al Kahalic
