KOROR, Palau — Palau’s Independence Day on Oct. 1, 2025, was celebrated alongside the Olchotel Belau Fair, where traditional games drew large crowds and highlighted aspects of the country’s cultural heritage.

The events began at 11 a.m. with Mengeched e Menges a Lius, a competition that started by testing participants’ balance as they raced while carrying baskets of coconuts on their heads to partners waiting on the opposite side. The partners then moved on to husking, cracking and shaving coconut challenges, which required experience combined with precision and focus.
Spear throwing and tug-of-war contests followed, with categories for both youth and adults. The tug-of-war drew strong reactions from the crowd, particularly during a match in which Keira Nestor and her team secured a decisive victory through coordinated effort.
Spectators from different states and communities provided steady encouragement throughout the day, creating an atmosphere of support for the participants. Organizers noted that the games not only entertained but also showcased traditional skills and practices that remain part of Palau’s cultural identity.
The Independence Day celebrations and fair concluded with broad recognition of the participants’ efforts, which highlighted determination, teamwork and cultural continuity.
