The March 1st Night Market for Champs, a successful fundraising event in support of Special Olympics Palau was the first of March’s two night markets.
The purpose of this fundraising was to assist the Special Olympics World Games travel expenses to Abu Dhabi on March 14-21, 2019 to join 7,500 athletes from 190+ countries to participate in 24 Olympic Sports. In support of the Olympians, #ONETEAM and MVCE donated their dance and live band music performances respectively. Also joining MVCE was Lawrence, one of Palau’s favorite old-time vocalists.
Traditional dance performances included the Smiich Dance Group, followed by Contemporary Dance by the Ngarchemai Dancers.
The food gets better at the Night Market every time, with a mix of aromas from local to international foods, fried snacks and more. Palau High School Freshman Class and the Palau Polynesian Dance Group were also providing food sales for their fundraising activities. Side events included a Cheriut Weaving Demonstration of Palau’s traditional grass skirts by Mrs. Uai Skebong, Storyboard Carving Demonstration by Ms. Emerita Kerradel and Face Painting Ms. Elsei Tellei. Japanese artist Mr. Tomoya Uemura was also displaying his reflections of a previous visit to Palau, when he was inspired to become an artist.
The Night Markets are a venue for local entrepreneurs to sell and display their products and services, and for local talent to perform in dance or music. The March 15th Night Market will be a celebration of Youth Day. Because PVA only conducts Night Markets twice monthly, there will be no Night Market on March 29th.
