Koror, Palau –   On February 23rd and 24th, the U.S. Embassy in Palau successfully completed a comprehensive crisis management exercise in partnership with key local government agencies and Diplomatic partners.

The exercise tested coordination procedures and communication protocols between the Embassy and local authorities in responding to a simulated tsunami scenario. Participants included representatives from the Red Cross and KLEMAT, the Diplomatic Corps, along with Embassy personnel.

“This exercise strengthens our ability to work together effectively during emergencies and natural disasters,” said Deputy Chief of Mission Shankar Rao.

The simulation focused on early warning systems, evacuation procedures, emergency communication with American citizens, and coordination between U.S. and Palau Government response teams. The exercise allowed both U.S. and Palau personnel to practice established protocols, identify areas for improvement, and reinforce the strong partnership between our two countries in disaster preparedness. The exercise supports Palau’s designation by UNESCO as Tsunami Ready, an international recognition program supported by NOAA that acknowledges communities with effective tsunami preparedness measures.

“We value our close cooperation with Palau Government authorities and Diplomatic Partners on disaster response,” added DCM Rao. “The exercise demonstrates our shared commitment to protecting lives and ensuring effective emergency response in vulnerable communities.”
