SUVA, 02 FEBRUARY 2017 (FBC NEWS) — Speculation is rife that the United States government is on the brink of pulling out of the Paris Agreement.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says he’s hopeful President Donald Trump will change his mind if he sees for himself the detrimental effects of climate change here in the Pacific.

“We have the opportunity to go and see him and invite him to Fiji and we will do so. We have done that before and we have invited him to come to Fiji to have a look at what Fiji’s going through and what the small Pacific Island Nations are going through with regards to climate change. Hopefully if he gets here, we’ll be able to change his mind.”

U.S Ambassador to Fiji Judith Cefkin says, there’s no guidance yet on the matter

“There’s probably some lively discussions and debates but there is a diversity of views within people working for President Trump about what the correct posture is in terms of climate change and the Paris agreement.”
