ASAN, Guam (Sept. 8, 2023) – Palau’s Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Environment (MAFE) and U.S. Indo-Pacific Command will host a Coastal Resilience Workshop (CRW) at Palau Community College in Koror, Republic of Palau, Sept. 12-14.

This event was planned and executed in collaboration with the Palau International Coral Reef Center and the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and supported by Joint Region Marianas and the U.S. Embassy in Palau.

The U.S. Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program and the Environmental Security Technology Certification Program helped fund the event in order to gain insights and feedback from subject matter experts in the region around research and development gaps and opportunities for improving coastal resiliency.

The CRW will engage academia, military, and civilian agencies from across the Indo-Pacific on research and development topics concerning coastal ecosystem preservation, conservation, and restoration. The U.S.-sponsored event includes partner-nation attendees from Australia, the Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Indonesia, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Thailand, and Tonga and promotes mutual understanding of environmental stewardship and long-term sustainability.

The CRW includes speaking sessions with government personnel, regional organizations, subject matter experts, and group activities focused on research, development, and policy opportunities. The event will enable participating nations to gauge the success of and identify gaps in current coastal resiliency methods, creating opportunities for process improvement and future cooperation.
