PPUC would like to apologize for the major unscheduled power outage and frequent fluctuations from early morning Friday 31st January 2020 beginning at 4:30 am to 3:00 pm.
At 4:30 am on that Friday morning, Power Distribution received a report of a major unscheduled island-wide outage. Crews traced the line to find a fruit bat on a line post between Nekken and Aimeliik Power Plant (APP). It was removed from the line and Malakal Power Plant (MPP) was contacted to energize power to no success. Crews then continued to trace the line but found no fault or damage. Therefore, it was determined to be a problem with one of the generators at APP.
Around 1:00 pm, the generator was reported to be operating well but was still tripping when operators tried to energize power. Lineman crews were dispatched to trace the line and discovered a static line at Nekken substation that had fallen on top of the primary line due to corroded connection. Linemen repaired the broken line and made necessary connections. After completion of repairs, APP was able to energize power and restore services back to normal to all affected areas by 3:00 pm.
