United States Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, in his issued statement to the 19th Micronesia Presidents’ Summit, quoted US Vice President Mike Pence in saying that America believes that Taiwan’s embrace of democracy is an example that should be supported internationally.

According to the statement, the US “respect and support” the decisions of some countries to continue to support Taiwan.

Taiwan is “a democratic success story, a reliable partner, and a force for good in the world,” Pompeo stated.

Pompeo said that the countries of Palau, Kiribati, the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Nauru together with the United States share “profound commitment to democracy and open societies.”

“These shared values are the foundation of, and a driving force in our relationships,” Pompeo added.

Pompeo also stated that the US welcomes opportunities to hear from the countries in Micronesia and to make sure they remain free from pursuing policies that are supportive of their national sovereignty, security, economic development, and prosperity.

State leaders from the Pacific region such as Palau, Republic of Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, and Nauru had gathered in Palau for the two-day Micronesia Presidents’ Summit held on February 20 and 21 to discuss major talks surrounding the issues in the region.

The Micronesia Presidents’ Summit had also invited the United States, Japan, and Australia to be part of the talks.

The Republic of China – Taiwan has been asserting its sovereignty as a nation even though the People’s Republic of China insists they are a breakaway province of the mainland.

Just recently, reports of China lobbying for support from the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), an inter-governmental organization in the Pacific, to accept that the Chinese Communist Party is the rightful government of the mainland and Taiwan had been shared online.

The Pacific is home to the last remaining supporters of Taiwan such as the Solomon Islands, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Tuvalu, and Palau. (Rhealyn C. Pojas)
