Linking Conservation to health in Aimeliik State Eco-Tour in Ngerderar Watershed Conservation Area and Ngerchebal Island a Marine Protected Area

Aimeliik, Palau – August 29, 2025 – The Palau Conservation Society (PCS) proudly hosted a special Nature for Wellness eco-tour in Aimeliik State with 10 staff members from the Western Caroline Trading Company (WCTC), one of PCS’s most dedicated Corporate Partners for Conservation (CPC). This event combined physical wellness, cultural exploration, and environmental education, highlighting the deep connections between human well-being and nature.
The day began with a heartfelt welcome from PCS Executive Director, Mr. Elbuchel Sadang. In his opening remarks, he expressed gratitude to WCTC for their ongoing support, stating, “Your presence here is more than symbolic. It’s a powerful testament to your commitment to protecting the natural heritage that sustains us all. These aren’t just conservation projects, they are legacies in the making.”
Following his remarks, Development Officer introduced the Nature for Wellness initiative, which aims to use nature as a tool to promote health, reduce stress, and increase conservation awareness. “This outing is about more than just fun in the sun,” she noted. “It’s about reconnecting with our environment, improving our health, and understanding the value of what we work so hard to protect.”
The eco-tour featured two distinct experiences in Aimeliik State. The first stop was the Ngerderar Watershed Conservation Area (NWCA), where Aimeliik System of Conservation Areas Coordinator Ms. Losii Samsel provided a brief overview of the site’s importance in watershed and biodiversity protection. The guided hike was led by Ranger Ms. Dirramid Ingereklii, who also shared cultural insights including the Legend of Ucherderar and its ties to Aimeliik’s history. Throughout the hike, PCS Communications Team members Ms. Heather and Mr. Isechal assisted participants in identifying local bird species, enriching the group’s appreciation for Palau’s endemic wildlife.
Participants walked along shaded forest trails, enjoyed the cooling mist of waterfalls, and paused to observe traditional sites that predate modern settlements. As one participant shared, “I really appreciate this activity” a simple yet powerful reflection of the day’s impact.
After lunch, the group boarded a boat to Ngerchebal Island, a marine protected area. There, they snorkeled in vibrant coral reefs and learned about the island’s critical role in marine monitoring and protection efforts. Participants were able to observe firsthand how ranger stations and surveillance help ensure the health of Palau’s marine ecosystems.
The impact of the day went beyond exploration and education. According to a pre-and post-event survey conducted by PCS, participants saw a 90 percent increase in physical activity compared to their usual routine, walked an average of over 8,000 steps, and experienced a significant drop in stress levels. Mood and mental well-being also improved dramatically, with 90 percent reporting a boost in their outlook after the event.
Environmental awareness soared, with 70 percent of participants stating they gained a great deal of knowledge about conservation, and 80 percent expressing a strong desire to become more involved in future efforts. Importantly, 90 percent of non-members said they are interested in joining PCS to continue supporting conservation work.
As the day concluded and the group returned to shore, PCS thanked the WCTC team for their partnership and participation. “By joining us today, you’ve supported more than conservation. You’ve invested in your team’s well-being and in the future of our island,” said Executive Director Sadang. WCTC’s involvement exemplifies how corporate support can go hand-in-hand with community wellness and environmental stewardship. As one participant put it simply, “This trip was worth it.”
Together, PCS and its partners are working to build a healthier, more resilient Palau for a vision of “Healthy Ecosystem for a Healthy Palau”.
Our heartfelt thanks to Team WCTC. Your ongoing support means so much to us!
