Koror, Palau – President Surangel Whipps Jr. of Palau emphasized the value of long-standing partnerships with countries like Australia during a recent address, highlighting decades of collaboration in areas ranging from sports development to renewable energy and maritime security.
Speaking during the Australian Embassy Reception Celebrating the Pacific Mini Games, Whipps expressed gratitude for Australia’s consistent support, describing the relationship as one rooted in friendship, resilience, and shared regional goals.
“I think what’s most important is the partnership and the friendships that we develop and the opportunities for us to continue to work together to promote peace and security,” Whipps said. “Because without peace and security, we have chaos.”
Whipps praised Australia for its support in helping Palauan athletes develop their talents, tracing the roots of cooperation to the Sydney Olympics, the first Games Palau participated in. He also acknowledged Australia’s role in sponsoring media coverage of the Pacific Mini Games, enabling more youth participation and international visibility.
The president also highlighted energy and environmental partnerships, noting the Australian government’s technical assistance in addressing challenges in Palau’s solar energy transition.
“We’ve learned, and we’ve found ways and used the best consultants, and want to thank Australia for providing the consultants to come and evaluate and say, ‘Okay, this is maybe what we need to target on to fix the problem,’” Whipps said. “Australia is a leader in this space.”
He pointed to the patrol boat program—a 30-year-old initiative—as a critical line of defense for Palau’s maritime zone, especially in deterring illegal fishing practices. Whipps also referenced broader collaborations including telecommunications upgrades, digital health system improvements, and ambitions for a carbon-free Pacific powered by renewables.
“When we struggle, Australia’s been there to lift us up,” Whipps said. “It didn’t just begin today. It began 30 years ago, and it continues.”
The Pacific Mini Games drew record participation this year, and Whipps used the occasion to stress how partnerships, not just performances, were at the heart of the event’s success. (By: L.N. Reklai)
