Palau President Surangel Whipps Jr. has requested the Legislature to schedule his State of the Republic Address (SORA) on April 25, 2024, according to a letter sent to lawmakers.

Whipps said in the letter that he is “looking forward to the opportunity to address the Olbiil Era Kelulau (OEK) and the Palauan people to discuss our shared vision for the future.”

This would be Whipps’ fourth SORA address since taking office in 2020.

The upcoming SORA will also be Whipps’ final address before the November election, where he will face his brother-in-law, former President Tommy Remengesau Jr.

Whipps is expected to highlight his legislative achievements during his term, including the signing of the COFA agreement.

Despite facing criticism over the implementation of the Palau Goods and Service Tax (PGST) and inflation, Whipps’ administration has announced tax refunds for many Palauans and the possibility of raising the minimum wage.

It is anticipated that his address will focus on his plans for future economic growth in the country.
