Public Alert Issued by Bureau of Public Works and Koror State Rangers
Koror, Palau – November 21, 2024 – The Bureau of Public Works, in collaboration with the Koror State Rangers, has issued an urgent alert regarding the discovery of a World War II unexploded ordnance (UXO) in the waters of Malakal Bay, also known as Ha’fa adai. The UXO is located at coordinates 7°19.578’N, 134°25.941’E, approximately 1.2 miles west of Dolphin Pacific and 1.12 miles south of Ice Box Park, at a depth of 50 feet.
Authorities strongly advise the public, including divers, snorkelers, fishermen, and boaters, to stay at least 10 meters away from the location to avoid potential hazards. To ensure public safety, the Japan Mine Action Service (JMAS) and the Koror State Rangers are working to place a no-entry buoy around the area.
The Koror State Rangers emphasized the importance of exercising caution, especially for those planning fishing, boating, or other recreational activities near the Rock Islands. The affected area poses a significant risk, and efforts are ongoing to manage and neutralize the UXO safely.
