KOROR, Palau — In a spirited town hall organized by Palau’s young citizens, presidential candidate Tommy Remengesau Jr. faced a series of probing questions about the nation’s future. The event, a first of its kind and unaffiliated with any political group, drew a large crowd of young people eager to engage directly with one of Palau’s leading political figures.

Education Reform: A New Approach for the Next Generation

Remengesau presented his vision for overhauling Palau’s education system, emphasizing the need to modernize and make it more responsive to the needs of students and educators alike. He proposed revising the school calendar to introduce a summer break, allowing teachers time for professional development and reducing burnout. Remengesau also stressed the importance of incorporating technology into classrooms, using innovative tools like educational cartoons to make learning more engaging and effective.

Supporting Veterans: Ensuring a Strong Future

Addressing concerns about veterans’ well-being, Remengesau highlighted Palau’s significant military community and the need for better support systems. He proposed creating a dedicated commission to handle veteran affairs, ensuring their needs are prioritized in negotiations with the United States under the Compact of Free Association. His plan includes expanding job placement programs to help veterans transition smoothly into civilian roles, contributing to the nation’s workforce.

Combating Drug Issues: Protecting Palau’s Youth

A major topic of concern for the young attendees was the rising problem of drug accessibility, particularly methamphetamine, among Palau’s youth. Remengesau called for a leadership change within the Bureau of Public Safety and suggested the re-establishment of a specialized drug enforcement agency. He also urged immediate action to prevent the spread of fentanyl from nearby regions and emphasized the need for thorough investigations into potential local drug production.

Looking Forward: Continuing the Conversation

This town hall marks the beginning of a series of youth-led discussions with Palau’s presidential candidates. A similar forum is planned with the other presidential contender, Surangel Whipps Jr., ensuring that young voices remain at the forefront of this election season. As the election nears, these dialogues highlight the growing influence of Palau’s younger generation in shaping the country’s future.
