KOROR, Palau — Palau opened its 31st Independence Day celebrations on Sept. 27 with a 3×3 basketball tournament that drew 11 teams and a strong turnout of fans at the National Gym parking lot in Ernguul Park.

Organized by the Palau Basketball Federation (PBF) in partnership with Civic Action Team 84-10 and the Palau National Youth & Cheldebechel Council, the event launched a week of festivities marking the nation’s independence anniversary.

The competition featured teams across four age divisions: 12 and under, 13-15, 16-18, and 19-23. A team from the Pacific Partnership also joined the field, while its members helped with event operations.

Team Airballers — Blair Xavier, Odam Dengokl, and ZayShawn Aguon — captured the title in the 16-18 division. Team 20-20 — Jerry Ngiraremiang, Noel Keene, and Reviel Lakobong — won the 19-23 bracket. Righteous Adaba claimed the 3-point shooting contest.

Winners received prizes ranging from fuel vouchers to gift certificates, while all participants walked away with T-shirts and basketballs.

The day opened with a prayer by Chaplain Hostetler, followed by a briefing on tournament rules from PBF Secretary General Jubilee Kuartei. Team Palau demonstrated International Basketball Federation (FIBA) 3×3 regulations before games began.

Fans enjoyed a midday performance by the Pacific Partnership Band, but afternoon rain forced organizers to move the tournament indoors to the Mesekiu Gym at Palau Community College.

“It was really exciting to see so many youth come out for this event,” Kuartei said. “We had one girls team, the Power Puff Girls, and I hope we see more girls participate in future events.”

Players also reflected on the competitive experience. “I had to challenge the older guys because my teammates were above 18,” one 16-year-old said. “It was tough at first, but after the first game, I got used to it. Even though we lost, it was fun to play with my friends and make memories.”

NYCC Executive Director Mia Kuartei praised volunteers and the crowd. “Having the Pacific Partnership Band perform was special, and we appreciate the fans who came to watch,” she said. “For the players, it’s always fun to see them improve each tournament, and their competitiveness reminds me why I love this game.”

Organizers credited the event’s success to support from Civic Action Team 84-10, the Division of Youth & Career Development, the Palau National Olympic Committee, Palau Community College, Pacific Partnership, and the 2025 Independence Day/OBF Committee.
