The 10th Olbiil Era Kelulau (OEK) passed on 1st reading a bill that proposes to impose a $10 tax on all imported tires.

Senate Bill 121 contends that reselling of used tires in Palau has become a “growing and lucrative business” that are mostly handled by non-Palauans.

“It is likely that the proceeds of such sales do not remain local, and are instead kept overseas,” the bill states.

“The Olbiil Era Kelulau finds that it is appropriate to impose an import tax of $10 on all imported tires to ensure the Republic benefits from these businesses,” the bill also reads.
