Koror, Palau – March 7, 2025 – The Republic of Palau marked International Women’s Day today with a National Forum held at the West Plaza Hotel on Lebuu Street, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. This year’s theme “For All Women and Girls – Rights. Equality. Empowerment.”, brought together women leaders and women-led groups to celebrate women’s achievements and promote the ongoing work for gender equality.

The forum was opened with powerful messages and keynote speeches that set the stage for a day of inspiring dialogue. A panel discussion brought further attention to the need for gender equality and women’s empowerment in all spheres of society. One of the key focuses of the forum was the critical issue of maternity leave, with panelists urging stronger policies to support women in balancing career and family life. This call for action highlighted the necessity for comprehensive maternity and parental leave policies that ensure women’s health and financial security, allowing them to contribute fully to both the workforce and their families.

International Women’s Day, observed worldwide on March 8, has its roots in the early 20th century when women began advocating for labor rights, voting rights, and equal opportunities. The United Nations officially recognized International Women’s Day in 1977, designating March 8 as a global day to celebrate the achievements of women while continuing to push for gender equality. The day serves not only as a moment of recognition but also as a call to action for advancing women’s rights across all sectors of society.

The forum concluded with a call to action for the government and businesses to take bold steps toward implementing stronger maternity leave policies, empowering women to fully participate in the workforce while having the support they need to care for their families.
