Koror, Palau – With just weeks remaining until the November 5, 2024, general election,
the Senate race in Palau has intensified, now featuring 27 candidates competing for one
of the 15 available seats. The latest addition to the field is Ziske Asanuma, a write-in
candidate whose community-driven platform centers on protecting Palauan youth and
strengthening substance abuse prevention.
Asanuma, known for his involvement in Palau’s sports community with over 25 years in basketball and 15 years as a spearfisherman, brings a focused, five-point plan aimed at addressing drug, alcohol, and tobacco issues among Palauan youth. His platform Includes:
- Protecting Youth from Substance Abuse – Asanuma advocates for expanded
school-based education on the dangers of alcohol, tobacco, and drugs. He plans
to strengthen community support for affected families, ensuring every young
person has access to resources to make informed, healthy choices. - Strengthening Prevention and Intervention Programs – To prevent substance
abuse from escalating, Asanuma calls for increased funding for counseling and
rehabilitation services for at-risk youth. His vision includes partnerships with
schools, healthcare providers, and local governments to create safe spaces for
young people seeking help without fear of judgment. - Enforcing Stricter Regulations and Accountability – To protect Palauan youth
from exploitation, Asanuma proposes tightening regulations on alcohol and
tobacco sales to minors and imposing stricter penalties on violators. He
advocates for establishing an Alcohol & Tobacco Commission to oversee
compliance across stores, bars, and restaurants. - Combating Illegal Drugs with Determination – Drawing on Palau’s success
with the Marine Sanctuary, Asanuma sees a similar commitment needed to
tackle illegal drugs. He supports harsher sentences for drug offenders,
continuous drug testing for government employees, and accountability within
leadership. - Empowering the Next Generation – Going beyond regulation, Asanuma aims
to invest in the growth and potential of Palau’s youth. His initiatives include
mentorship, vocational training, and entrepreneurship opportunities, providing
young people with skills to lead productive lives and stay clear of harmful
substances.
Asanuma’s candidacy adds a unique voice to the Senate race, bringing substance abuse prevention and youth empowerment to the forefront. “Together, we can break the cycle of substance abuse and build a healthier, more resilient Palau,” he shared in his campaign message. With his comprehensive platform, Asanuma hopes to inspire voters who seek long-term solutions for Palau’s youth and community well-being.
With 27 candidates now in the race, voters have a diverse slate of options as they head to the polls on November 5. This election promises to shape Palau’s legislative landscape, with each candidate presenting visions for a healthier, stronger future for the island nation.
