SUVA, 06 AUGUST 2021 (FBC NEWS) —Sixteen percent of Fijians who have succumbed to COVID-19 were not fully vaccinated, says Health Minister Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete.
Dr Waqainabete said these Fijians had just received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
While speaking on Mai TV’s Miracles Do Happen programme, Dr Waqainabete said 84 percent of those that died from COVID-19 were not vaccinated.
He clarified that no one that had been fully vaccinated had died in Fiji.
Dr Waqainabete acknowledged those Fijians who were now fully vaccinated.
He said people needed to adhere to instructions.
Health Ministry permanent secretary Dr James Fong said about 500,000 Fijians had received their vaccine shots and it was encouraging to note that people were now adhering to instructions.
He also reiterated the need for people to get vaccinated and to continue to adhere to COVID-19 protocols and public health measures.
Dr Waqainabete said there was a need to encourage those who were yet to receive their jab to get vaccinated to protect themselves and their loved ones at home.
