(Koror, Palau) Palauans can once again tune in to the sounds of Australia and the South Pacific, as ABC Radio Australia programs return to the airwaves after a near decade-long absence. The program officially launched on May 3, 2024, on EP FM radio station in Meyuns, Koror.

This revival stems from a successful partnership between Australia’s national public broadcaster and Palau’s own Eco Paradise (EP) FM Radio. A Memorandum of Understanding signed in June 2023 paved the way for this collaboration, leading to the construction of a new FM radio transmitter in Malakal, Koror, and support for EP FM from ABC Radio Australia. These initiatives aim to significantly enhance the quality and diversity of radio programming available to Palauan audiences.

“Partnership is very important,” said Palau’s Minister of State Gustav Aitaro, emphasizing the significance of collaboration not only with Australia but also with Palau’s private media. He highlighted how this partnership connects Palau to the wider Pacific region and fosters closer ties between Palauans and Australians.

Australian Ambassador Richelle Turner echoed the sentiment, stating, “Media plays an important role in sharing stories, elevating Pacific voices, and celebrating diverse cultures. We are excited about these collaborative efforts between ABC Radio Australia and Eco Paradise FM. I look forward to tuning in and hearing stories about Palau and from Palauan journalists, showcasing the close ties between our countries.”

Justine Turner, Manager of ABC Radio Australia, shared Ambassador Turner’s enthusiasm, emphasizing the program’s dual purpose: bringing news and stories from Australia and the south Pacific to Palau, while also sharing Palauan stories with audiences in Australia and across the Pacific.

“It’s a truly significant day,” said Justine Kelly, ABC Radio Australia Manager. “The launch of ABC Radio Australia in Palau on 91.5 FM marks a historic moment, signifying our return to the North Pacific after almost a decade off the air. It’s big, really big!”
