The Soroptimist International(SI) Palau Club LYD Chairwoman Kliu Kangichi awarded Ms. Celeste Sumor with ‘Live Your Dream’(LYD) award worth $1000.00 on March 16th.

The award is given to young girls and women who need financial support while pursuing their education. Ms. Sumor expressed her gratitude for the award as pursuing her education along with being a grandmother was challenging. Her dream is to complete her higher education and work as a teacher.

She currently attends Palau Community College pursuing her BA in the special online San Diego program and anticipates graduating in 2021. Sandra Pierontazzi who was a Soroptimist guest speaker spoke about her strong support for education scholarships and awards which she believes is the first step to elevate and improve people’s lives as well as empower women and girls to better opportunities in life.

SI-Marianas President Ms. Jessica Castro from Guam also contributed to SI-Palau’s ‘LYD’ award program and shared her experience as a Soroptimist and activities in Guam. Their club started ‘Erica’s House’, a shelter in Guam for victims of domestic violence named after a young girl who was a victim.

It serves as a intermediary safety house for parents going through tumultuous separation or divorce to exchange their children at this safety house during times for custody visits.

SI-Palau President Risong Tarkong and members expressed deep appreciation for SI -Marianas Club of Guam for being SI-Palau Clubs charter sponsor and presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Jessica Castro’s leadership and support to SI-Palau Club.

SI-Palau Club advocates for educational, social and economic improvements and betterment of women and girls and meets every first Wednesday of the month from 12pm to 1:00pm at Rock Island café conference room and is open to guests for membership or support.

Soroptimist is one of the oldest women’s club in the United States established in 1921 in California which now holds numerous chapters with thousands of memberships throughout the world. It is also an advisory council member for women in the United Nations. (PR)
