The Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE), a non-profit organization affiliated with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, is currently on a mission to understand the needs and challenges faced by businesses in the North Pacific region. This strategic exploration marks the first time CIPE has ventured into this area, underscoring its commitment to fostering democracy and economic growth through private sector development.
Jane Kim, Program Director for Pacific Islands and Korea and Rebecca Russavage, Program Officer of Program from CIPE spent a busy week in Palau meeting with various agencies and people, gathering information on business needs and development challenges.
CIPE’s approach centers around collaborating with local partners to identify key issues impacting businesses on the ground. Through open dialogue and information exchange, they aim to develop programs and initiatives that address these challenges and empower businesses to thrive. Some of the current issues areas raised during their visit to the North Pacific include:
- Hiring and retaining qualified employees: A skilled workforce is essential for business success, and CIPE recognizes the difficulties companies face in attracting and retaining talent in the region.
- Building a strong supply chain: Reliable and efficient supply chains are crucial for economic stability and growth.
- Maintaining a balance with the tourism industry: Tourism plays a vital role in the North Pacific economy, but it’s crucial to ensure sustainable practices that benefit both businesses and local communities.
- Finding the right balance between protecting Palau and allowing foreign investment: Striking a balance between protecting local interests and attracting foreign investment is essential for Palau’s economic future.
CIPE’s efforts in the North Pacific are part of its broader strategy to strengthen democracy and counter authoritarian influence around the world.
The organization believes that a vibrant private sector is a cornerstone of a healthy democracy, and by empowering businesses, they contribute to building more resilient and prosperous societies.
While CIPE’s future presence in the North Pacific remains undefined, its initial exploration trip has yielded valuable insights and established crucial connections with local partners. They are committed to working collaboratively with stakeholders in the region to develop a Pacific strategy that addresses the specific needs and challenges of the North Pacific business community.
