Koror, Palau – The Bureau of Human Resources in Palau is aiming to significantly reduce the time it takes for businesses to obtain work permits for their employees, vowing a minimum 10-day turnaround under a streamlined process.
Previously, employers faced potentially longer wait times due to various procedural steps. Now, the Bureau has implemented clearer internal workflows and faster clearances to expedite permit issuance. Chief Wanda Remeliik stated during a recent media tour that employers meeting all requirements can expect their permits within 10 days.
“If all your submitted documents are complete and have gone through all the required steps,” Remeliik emphasized, “in 10 days, we can get you your employee’s work permit.”
Some unavoidable delays still exist, however. A 15-day legal waiting period allows locals first priority for advertised jobs, and obtaining a signature from the Division of Immigration takes about five days due to separate agency procedures. Incomplete applications and employers not promptly collecting approved permits can also contribute to waiting times.
Recognizing these bottlenecks, the Bureau is actively seeking further improvements. Director Terra Sairong Nabeyama expressed gratitude to the staff for embracing change and their efforts to identify ways to “shorten processes” and enhance service efficiency. Additionally, the Bureau is exploring the possibility of enabling online application submissions for even faster processing.
These initiatives reflect the Bureau’s commitment to improving customer service and supporting businesses in Palau. By streamlining the work permit process and reducing wait times, the Bureau aims to facilitate hiring of qualified foreign workers and ultimately contribute to the country’s economic growth.
