Following information from a local fisherman of a bomb in the Ngaremlengui Channel, Cleared Ground Demining (CGD), concerned for the security of Palau’s new high speed Internet cable that runs through the channel, organised with the Ngaremlengui Government for the removal of the Japanese High Explosive 220lb aircraft bomb once an EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) assessment had been conducted by CGD.
Cleared Ground’s Palauan dive team, with logistical assistance from Ngaremlengui Rangers, lifted the bomb from the sea bed and towed it away from the channel. The CGD team then removed the bomb from the water and transported it to CGD’s Demolition Range. This CGD emergency removal task was made possible by funding from the New Zealand Government.
