A colorful comic book featuring the legend of Kedung el Chebub me a Dengerenger el Chebud (The good Grasshopper and the naughty bad Grasshopper), was recently released by the Bureau of Cultural and Historical Preservation.
The legendKedung el Chebud and Dengerenger el Chebud is fromKayangel State and illustratesa story that teaches a moral lesson of respect and honoring those who have more knowledge and experience.
“It is about honoring and esteeming those who have more knowledge and experience than ourselves. Additionally, it is about understanding that by doing the right thing, we benefit from that knowledge and experience,” explained Historical Preservation Specialist Filly Carabit.

The idea of the comic book featuring local legendwas proposed by Director Sunny Ngirmang and Deputy of Historical Preservation Office Calvin Emesiochel.
As part of the ongoing effort to strengthen awareness and to educate the public about Palauan culture and history, the Bureau of Cultural and Historical Preservation thought that the comic book would be a fun and new idea to publish Palauan stories with moral lessons.
Director Sunny Ngirmang and Deputy Calvin Emesiochel were not the only ones involved with the development of the comic book, other collaborators include Staff Historian Lynda Tellames, Historic Preservation Specialist Sylvia Kloulubak, Historic Preservation Specialist Filly Carabit.
They also had help from John G. Swogger who is credited as a Writer and Illustrator of the comic. Swogger is based in the UK. He is an archaeologist and illustrator who writes comic books aimed at children and young adults. He has produced work for museums, books, and magazines.
The comic book was distributed to all private and public schools including Palau Community College. They were also distributed to state governments, the public library, and government agencies. The comics are free and anyone can get a copy upon availability at the Bureau of Cultural and Historical Preservation.
The Bureau of Cultural and Historical Preservation is now planning for the next comic book.
