The Complete Streets Walkability Road Project can help combat climate change, which will encourage commuters to drive less and shift to a lower emission mode of traveling, like walking and bicycling, according to the Palau’s National Climate Change office.
The Complete Streets-Walkability road improvement project will launch a walkway in Meketii Hamlet on June 27 as part of the collaborative effort of property owners, businesses, as well as technical and civil organizations, including Palau Walks.
The project is geared towards achieving road improvements that encourage safer, enjoyable walking experiences for pedestrians.
The aim of the project, among others , is the creation of sidewalks, bicycle facilities and street beautification.
“People that are healthy are more resilient to climate and weather shocks , in the context of climate change it’s called adaptation… healthier people can adapt to the changing environment , Palau National Climate Change Office Coordinator Erbai Xavier Matsutaro said.
He said that the complete street project, “ enables the road system to foster walking and cycling, making commuters less reliant on driving cars “which is one of the modes of transportation that produces greenhouse gas emissions.”
The idea behind the project he said is to make roads accessible, and provide a safe space for commuters.
He said the effort has three pilot projects in Meketii, Airai and near Asahi Ballfield.
In other parts of the world, the Complete Street project can foster economic development and increase tourism activity. ( B. Carreon)
