On the occasion of the 4th anniversary of the passage of the Palau National Marine Sanctuary (PNMS) Act, the Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) is holding a contest to translate “Palau National Marine Sanctuary” into Palauan. This contest is open to people of all ages, and individuals living both in and outside of Palau.

While PNMS is a contemporary creation, it is rooted in the concept of BUL from ancient times. In the same way, we would like to reinforce this modern expression of traditional conservation through the Palauan language. PICRC invites everyone to take the challenge to translate “Palau National Marine Sanctuary” into Palauan. The best translation is not necessarily a literal one, but one that captures the essence of the PNMS.

The winner will receive $100 and a ticket to the PICRC’s 19th Anniversary Dinner Gala.  The translation will be used in all PNMS communications moving forward. The contest will remain open from now until Thursday, October 24, 2019. Entries should be emailed to picrc@picrc.org, or dropped off at the Palau Giant Clam gift shop in a sealed envelope, one entry per person.

The winner of the contest will be announced on October 28, 2019, at the PNMS Anniversary event hosted at Palau International Coral Reef Center.

More information regarding this contest may be obtained by contacting PICRC Outreach Officers at phone 680-488-6950. (PR)
