David Kabua is the new President of the Republic of Marshall Islands after edging out incumbent Hilde Heine with votes of 20 to 12 during the first RMI Parliamentary session yesterday.

The 69 year-old veteran politician and former cabinet member, who is also the second son of the Marshall Islands first President Amata Kabua, became the ninth President of the Marshall Islands.

Mr. Kabua has held two ministerial posts, health and internal affairs in 2012, 2013 and 2014 and has been in public office for decades.  Mr. Kabua is said to be well-liked and perceived to be able to bring different groups together.

Republic of the Marshall Islands has the parliamentary system where the elected members of the parliament elect the President of the country.

RMI Parliament also re-elected Kenneth Kedi as the Speaker during the session. (L.N. Reklai)
