September 24, 2021 – At around 10:37am on the morning of September 22, 2021, a 39 year old male from Iyebukel Hamlet of Koror State, Mr. Buck Miller, was found unresponsive in a holding cell at the Koror Jail and was immediately transported to the Belau National Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Mr. Miller had been in a secured jail cell by himself when found by the on-duty officers at the Division of Corrections. It is the responsibility of the Division of Corrections to protect the public, inmates and staff members of the Division, hence this case has been referred to the Criminal Investigations Division for a more thorough investigation into the incident.
Mr. Miller was detained at the Koror Jail in the early morning hours of September 22, around 2:00 am following a report of a disturbance in which he was the suspect. Mr. Miller was detained and placed in a holding cell awaiting processing and release later that day. However, during routine rounds, officers on duty discovered Mr. Miller’s body in his cell and alerted Central Dispatch.
The initial findings of the CID investigation into the incident noted that there were no signs of foul play, nor any obvious injuries on the body. Investigators have also requested further medical investigation and documentation and are currently awaiting the doctor’s report. It is suspected that Mr. Miller suffered from an underlying health condition which led to his passing.
