The Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. David Williamson to its Board of Directors to serve a term of four years.

Dr. Williamson brings with him over three decades of experience in marine science, conservation, and fisheries management. He earned his PhD from James Cook University in Townsville, Australia, in 2009. His doctoral and post-doctoral research focused on quantifying the ecological and fisheries sustainability benefits of no-take marine reserves in coral reef ecosystems. Since 2020, Dr. Williamson has been with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, where he leads the strategic planning and operational delivery of the Crown-of-Thorns Starfish Control Program.
“It is an honour to be nominated to the PICRC Board,” said Dr. Williamson. “Although I have never visited or worked in Palau, I have long admired its incredible beauty, marine biodiversity, and world-leading management. Palau has been on my must-do list for many years, and I am excited to learn and contribute to PICRC’s mission.”
As a member of the Board, Dr. Williamson emphasized the importance of collaboration and shared vision. He looks forward to working closely with fellow Board members and PICRC staff to understand existing strengths and identify opportunities for growth. “Great things can be achieved by working collaboratively,” he noted. “I intend to draw upon my knowledge, experience, and professional network to amplify the effectiveness and awareness of PICRC’s work.”
Dr. Williamson also highlighted PICRC’s strong international standing. “PICRC is well regarded globally,” he said. “Palau and PICRC are well positioned to serve as a regional and global exemplar of effective marine conservation management informed by targeted research and monitoring. I trust that I can assist PICRC in elevating its international connections, collaboration, and reputation.”
“We are fortunate to welcome Dr. Williamson to the PICRC Board,” stated PICRC’s CEO, Roxanne Siual Blesam. “His background in coral reef science and fisheries management fits well with our mission. We appreciate his willingness to share his knowledge and time as we keep working to protect Palau’s reefs and marine resources.”
PICRC also expresses its gratitude to His Excellency President Surangel S. Whipps, Jr. for his nomination of Dr. Williamson to the Board, and to the Senate of the Twelfth Olbiil Era Kelualu for its confirmation of the appointment and for their continued support of PICRC’s work.
PICRC welcomes Dr. Williamson’s expertise and perspective as it continues to advance its mission of supporting the conservation and sustainable use of marine resources in Palau and beyond.
