Overview:

The Palau International Coral Reef Center met with leaders from Melekeok to provide updates on the Palau National Marine Sanctuary, highlighting new scientific research, community engagement efforts, and the sanctuary’s impact on local livelihoods. The consultation offered state officials a closer look at how data and policy are shaping Palau’s long-term ocean conservation strategy.

Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) held a meeting with the Governor of Melekeok and the Melekeok State Legislature to provide a comprehensive update on the Palau National Marine Sanctuary (PNMS). The meeting focused on the background of the PNMS, its establishment, and its guiding principles in relation to Palau’s national conservation efforts.

This meeting served as a direct consultation between the PICRC team and Melekeok’s leadership to ensure a clear understanding of the sanctuary’s role and research.

Meeting Highlights:

  • Sanctuary Overview and Engagement: The team provided an overview of the PNMS framework and shared highlights regarding ongoing community outreach and engagement efforts.
  • Scientific Research Updates: The discussion covered cutting-edge research, including environmental DNA (eDNA) studies, bathymetric mapping, and the monitoring of cetaceans. 
  • Tuna Research: Researchers presented findings on tuna reproductive cycles to help inform management decisions.
  • Socioeconomic Impacts: Results from socioeconomic studies were briefly addressed to provide context on the sanctuary’s impact on the community.

The meeting concluded with an open discussion and Q&A session, allowing the Governor and members of the Legislature to engage with the data and management strategies shaping the future of the PNMS.
