PORT MORESBY (POST COURIER) — Death toll for the earthquake in Morobe has now reached 10 after a man was reported to be killed by rocks from a land slide.
In Nariawang village Wantoat local level government, Kiki Samuel in his mid 40s was at the Leron River to bath when he met his fate. He is from Wain in Nawaeb District.
Wau-Waria reported three deaths, Nawaeb reported four, Kabwum one and Marawaka at the border of Menyamya and Obura-Wonenara reported one.
So far eight people have been injured and are admitted to the hospital and health centres for medical treatment.
According to Kupik Michael the community leader, the victim (Samuel) was at the river when the rocks rolled down from the mountains near the river and crushed him. He died instantly.
He was identified between 12-1pm by people from another village.
Provincial Disaster office has sent officers to assess and provide reports of the natural disaster from affected communities.
Villages in Markham district which were hit with destruction of homes and land slide activity are Sangan, Garang, Ampim, Waterrais, Sirasira with more than 10 houses damaged. Two women from Sirasira village were seriously injured. One is admitted at Mutzing Health Centre and the other admitted to Angu Memorial Hospital.
Wantoat road is currently cut off by land slide. Mutzing health extension officer Brian Manari visited the affected community on Sunday with his medical team and confirmed that the two injured women had sustained broken bones.
Survivor, Nanufam Kuram, an elderly woman from Sirasira village said she was at the river when rocks rolled down and broke her right leg. She is admitted at Mutzing Health Centre.
