KOROR, Palau — Mindszenty High School students delved into the world of medical science through interactive skills labs designed to teach practical animal care and medical techniques. Led by the Osebelel a Charm Animal Care and Learning Center, the sessions held on September 3, 6, and 19 aimed to inspire young people, especially women, to consider careers in the medical sciences.

The program was funded by the Grameen Foundation and spearheaded by a team from Osebelel a Charm, including Dr. Kristen Decina Singeo, Miel Sequeira-Holm, Angie Kengin, and Janet Nasau, in collaboration with Mindszenty science teacher Maribel Rabago.

Learning Through Hands-On Labs

The first two sessions, on September 3 and 6, focused on wound care. Ninth and tenth-grade students practiced suturing techniques using silicone skin models and suture materials, providing a practical application of wound-healing concepts. Students expressed enthusiasm about mastering this foundational medical skill.

On September 19, the focus shifted to microbiology. Tenth graders learned to dye and stain samples to identify bacteria and yeast, observed blood cells under a microscope, and studied parasites. Using a teaching microscope, students worked collaboratively, projecting slides onto a laptop and screen for group discussions. They practiced slide preparation, microscope operation, and organism identification—valuable skills for future science labs and college courses.

Fostering Interest in Medical Careers

A pre-lab survey assessed students’ interest in medical fields such as nursing, medicine, veterinary science, and biomedical research. Post-lab surveys showed a notable increase in interest, highlighting the impact of the program.

“These types of programs are essential for inspiring future healthcare professionals,” said Dr. Singeo. “The skills taught here are foundational and serve as stepping stones for academic and career journeys.”

Community Support and Future Opportunities

Osebelel a Charm extended gratitude to Mindszenty High Principal Alan Marbou, participating students, and their parents. The program was made possible through the Grameen Foundation’s grant and aims to continue supporting education in medical sciences.

In addition to the labs, Osebelel a Charm plans to donate supplies to the school’s science lab to enhance learning resources. The organization also invites volunteers and interns of all ages to their veterinary hospital in Medalaii, offering further opportunities for Palauan youth to explore medical and scientific fields.

Empowering Palauan Youth

This initiative reflects a broader effort to nurture interest in medical sciences among Palauan youth, especially women. By engaging students in practical, hands-on experiences, programs like these help inspire the next generation of healthcare and science professionals, fostering a brighter future for the community.
